RESILIENT AND
INCLUSIVE CITIES LAB
2020 - Resilient Urban Systems - ES3202
-
Analysing the different subsystems (social, ecological, technological) of East Coast and identifying the type of resilience with focus on (resilience of what, to what, for whom, where, and why)
-
Assessing a set of important ecosystem services provided by natural infrastructure
-
Interpreting results to propose future recommendations to enhance resilience
In the Resilient Urban Systems course (ES3202, Asian School of the Environment), students work in a group to assess the resilience of Singapore’s East Coast neighbourhood. The project involves:
In 2020, students benefitted from the experience of urban systems experts at the
Centre for Liveable Cities. Students formed three groups with a focus on:
1) Urban Cooling and Flood Risk Mitigation by street trees
2) Food Resilience in the face of Climate Change
3) Rain Gardens for Resilient Shophouses
URBAN COOLING AND FLOOD RISK MITIGATION
By Faith Wang, Han Rae Ann, Marcus Lim
Goal: To improve the distribution of ecosystem services provided by urban trees by informing planning in vulnerable areas with sparse distribution
How can we enhance resilience to climate change, such heat stress and flood risk, with natural infrastructure?
To examine the potential impacts of climate change on temperatures and rainfall patterns in Singapore, Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 scenario is used.

FOOD RESILIENCE IN FACE OF CLIMATE CHANGE
By Ang Wan Qi, Chua Ying Xuan, Victoria Cahyani Tanggono
Goal: To strengthen food resilience in East Coast
What role could East Coast play in Singapore’s 30 by 30 vision?
RAIN GARDENS FOR RESILIENT SHOPHOUSES
By Ben Chua, Tan Shi Ying
Goal: To analyse the resilience of shophouses and their neighbourhoods to pluvial flooding
How does introducing rain gardens within Marine Parade conservation site increase the resilience of shophouses to pluvial flooding?
